I really like mill decks and I'm looking forward to running this deck. I still am considering Emperor Thaurissan and Nat,the Darkfisher. Also Eviscerate [/card] vs [card] Shadow Strike. Looking for feedback and opinions.
I think the strength of this deck comes from the versatility of using different ways to get the Coldlight Oracle played. Like always Shadowstep is a strong mill card and has been the core of mill rogue for a long time. With the new expansion, Xaril, Poisoned Mind can also be able to get a shadow step like card for a cost of 1 mana (along with the others). Brann Bronzebeard also makes this deck an amazing thing. Brann makes all battlecrys more explosive and twice better. Shadowcaster, is a great card for mill. The fact that it is pretty much another shadow step makes it even better. If you can get Brann with the Shadowcaster it would be great. With all these, Preparation + Thistle Tea give you a lot of opportunities to mill.
As well Vanish, Preparation, Deadly Poison, SI:7 Agent,Backstab are all good versatile rogue cards and fit well. There is now Shadow Strike which replaces Eviscerate in my opinion. Cult Apothecaryfor healing and maybe getting the double battlecry.
Living is a difficult task with the removal of Antique Healbot and Deathlord. With Cult Apothecary I try to restore some of that.
Update #1
Removed one Thistle Tea , Shadowcaster , Azure Drake. Added Fan of Knives and two Refreshment Vendor.
So it turns out that I really need more survivability. I was dying a lot and needed more health. Refreshment Vendor is a great choice due to the fact with the Brann and battlecry. I added a fan of Knives because I need a more cycle. I was having some problems not drawing Coldlight Oracle . I removed a Thistle Tea and aShadowcaster I felt that they were too slow (even for a mill deck). I only have two preps so I would have to play one Thistle or Vanish at regular 6 mana.
Update #2 Add Earthen Ring Farseer. Seems tons better than Cult Apothecary.
Awesome deck! Since I didn't have all of the cards, I subbed a few things here and there and found that Violet Teacher works extremely well in this deck. I may have just gotten lucky, but with all of the cheap spells I figured it would do the trick. Super fun to play, good work!
Thanks! I can defiantly see Violet Teacher working great.
Replacement for xaril?
On the top of my head Azure Drake is probably pretty good. Spell Damage is good with the spells and you draw for more chances to get Coldlight.
Hmmm. Prep is SO important it's kinda hard not to have it. It's kind of essential due to no other card reducing spells THAT much. Sorry.
I've been hoping to run a Mill!Rogue in Standard and finally got around to building one in addition to keeping my Wild version of the deck. The lack of Antique Healbot and Deathlord has definitely hurt the deck. Since I'm missing Xaril and Shadowcaster, I subbed in single copies of Betrayal and Lorewalker Cho. Cho's more of an afterthought since I would have placed Sabotage in that slot (being able to remove a minion and weapon is pretty nice against Hunters and Paladins, I've found). Betrayal is one of the few Rogues have for controlling swarms and isn't typically expected, so in the event of a 3-enemy field you can make some nice removals and Eviscerate, Poisoned Dagger or Sap to remove the remaining minion.
So I ran the deck in Casual for two Rogue Victories' Daily Quest against RenoC'Thun Druid and C'Thun Mage. Unfortunately Thistle Tea and Cho have not had their time to shine yet, so I can't really comment on their effectiveness. Cho does make for a reasonable soft Taunt, which the Druid killed with his Icehowl. Double Refreshment Vendor isn't a bad idea; against the Mage I was down to 2HP, and ended up playing Brann + RV + Shadowstep + RV. Of course the Mage was at full health so it didn't matter to her so much. :3
Expensive as it is, it might be worth shoving in Blade Flurry. It's still the better AoE option against weaker, cheap swarms if Prepping Vanish isn't possible.
In conclusion, fantastic! I named this deck "Watch Your Deck" under my collection. Cheers!
Yeah I have felt that this deck doesn't have as much as board clear then it used to. It might be worth it to put flurry in I haven't really tried. I hate playing against Shaman evolve or really any Shaman deck in the meta and getting stomped.
After a few more runs I think I've got a better feel for the deck - it still faces its usual problems, especially against decks that just flood the field and you haven't tapped into your removals. I haven't tested Flurry but I don't think I will - never mind its cost, I've found that I've needed the removal provided by a 3/2 Knife more often than not. Betrayal and other combos I've listed above help out a lot more for cheaper.
Cho has definitely had his chance to shine, though probably more so against slower decks that are forced to deal with him using Spells and Doomsayer, to name a few - this way Cho is very likely to at least pick up a nice spell or two. Hilarious picks I've had include Map to the Golden Monkey, Forgotten Torch and Flamestrike. You can also chuck Vanish, Sap and Deadly Poison to your opponent where more often than not they'll just be complete wastes of space. Bonus!
Sadly I don't see Mill Rogue doing well in the aggressive environment we have now. But that's not why we play Mill - we play Mill for the stories to tell.
"Me choose to go mill; me no need to kill" - Anti-Smorc
The very first time I played this, on the second turn I played Coin > Preparation > Thistle Tea and pulled a Coldlight Oracle. That kind of blind luck is just setting me up for disappointment every other time I play this deck haha.
What's a good replacement for Xaril? I'm using Elise.
Lol yeah it's always nice to get tea into oracle. For a replacement, I'm not totally sure. Maybe Bloodmage Thalnos. It would give you some good spell damage and card draw. I have seen many decks run him and work really well. Also, maybe Lorewalker Cho as @cuttlefish5 suggested. I haven't tried it but it might work. I do highly recommend Xaril because he gives you a shadowstep, card draw, stealth, 2 damage, and 3+ minion damage which all work really well in this deck. Thanks!
what about Lorewalker Cho? Might be perfect for burning down cards towards the end of the game, if used with the right spells. Ideally with deadly poison.
and what about Earthen Ring Farseer instead of RV? One less health for you, but 4 less for your opponent.
I'd like mill rogue if it is still viable on WOG ladder at decent ranks. Like, rank 10 with mill would already be a great success to me.
I think Earthern Ring Farseer is better than Apothecary, just swap those out imo. Refreshment Vendor is a solid card, you don't care about their health as much in mill. You just play it to not die and stall out till you get your big swing turns.
I'll try that thank you for the suggestion.
Yeah Lorewalker is an interesting point that I haven't considered. I really want to try him now. Just don't have the dust to craft him atm. :(. I will be trying Earthen Ring Farseer out. Thanks!
Opened Nat, the Darkfisher the other day and was a bit disappointed with with my first WOTOG legendary. Thought I'd give mill rogue a go (had never played a mill deck before) and if I didn't like it id just dust him. Had an absolutely blast! flipped the game on its head, even managed a thistle tea into cold light oracle. Brilliant fun! Cheers for the deck
Glad you liked it. Thanks!
Nice deck!
Thank you!
