Hi there, I am casual player from France and I just got legend for the first time with this baby.
Wanna sail the sea and raid cities? Wanna ride dragons? Hell yeah, you can be the dragon queen with this deck! And if you're a bit behind, take off your clothes and your opponent will concede (or at least you can scratch you genitals comfortably).
Why Playing this deck ?
In my opinion, it's a really good deck to learn competitive play. Since it's not too sequencing heavy (like patron or oil) but has some important choices to make, you will be able to focus more easily on the long term strategy, what's in your opponent's hand and the outcome of important decisions. That's the essence of hearthstone.
Plus, really, winning with that Mortal Strike top deck is very satisfaying.
Legend Proof
Happy ?
Ideas behind the deck
The idea is that SMorC dragon warrior was quite viable last season and the deck only required 6 dragons. Now people are using Faerie Dragon in pirate and I prefer Azure Drake over Loot Hoarder for drawing (draw only late game and boosts Mortal Strike . Finally Alexstrasza's Champion, which is better than Argent Horserider if you have an activator.
And there comes the deck ! The two synergies aren't that hard to manage and most importantly they don't hurt each other. I litteraly never have been in situation to choose between pirates and dragons. The deck has absolutely crazy early game tempo and puts ton of pressure on the opponent !
The only thing is you give up bloodsail raider, which often dies anyways… it's not that bad value wise, but not the greatest card of the pirate decks.
Important Decisions you have to make
- Trade or face ? You really want to be force trading (forcing your opponent to suicide his minions in yours). There is no way you can be going face all game long. Rule of thumb : trade only if it takes one move, if it spends less damage trading than the surviving minion would do by surviving one more turn. Don't trade if you have lethal in two turns, even if the plan includes topdecking a Mortal Strike.
- Upgrading weapon ? You want to develop minions more than weapon… but you want a weapon equiped as often as possible. You don't care too much about wasting one charge of weapon. Rule of thumb : If it makes it possible to kill a minion, upgrade. If you have a better weapon in hand and you can play a minion instead (dragon or berserk) keep it for later. Turn 5+, always upgrade. Don't feel bad about double upgrading a 1/3 weapon if you have to.
- Saving Faerie Dragon [/card] for [card]Alexstrasza's Champion ? You want to activate your champion but you want tempo too… Rule of thumb : vs mage, rogue, druid and priest play it ASAP. If it dies from the board, never play it.
- Saving Southsea Deckhand or Dread Corsair for Bloodsail Cultist [/card] ? You want tempo, but upgrading your weapon is priceless and the infamous 1000/1000 Arcanite reaper will get you legend. Rule of thumb : If you have [card]bloodsail cultist and a good weapon either in hand or equiped, save the pirates for the next turn. If you don't have Bloodsail Cultist in hand play them.
Mulligans
This where the deck is fun, there are many thing you will keep or throw away depending on the other cards. The important thing is to have a curve up to turn 3. Here we go, the order is from the least to the most important cards to have in hand :
- Heroic Strike, Mortal Strike, Arcanite Reaper: always throw away.
- Upgrade! : throw away 99% of the time. If you really have a curve, that counters a specific deck, why not (something like Fiery War Axe, Upgrade! and Dread Corsair)
- Acidic Swamp Ooze : Keep vs warrior only (and kill that axe !).
- Azure Drake : Keep you have Alextrazza champion's but no other activator.
- Kor'kron Elite : Keep on coin if you have a turn 1 and a turn 2. Especially vs Chamans, keep if you have Fiery War Axe to counter the wolves.
- Southsea Deckhand, Bloodsail Cultist, Dread Corsair : Depends on the curve but most likely throw away. You can keep them if you are sure you will use them in synergy and on curve. Don't plan on a pirate surviving 2 turns, don't plan on drawing a pirate you don't have yet.
- Sir Finley Mrrgglton : Keep if you have good turn 2/3 and thing you can potentially see Argent Squire (chaman, warlock especially
- Frothing Berserker : Keep it if on curve or it's your only minion good minion.
- Alexstrasza's Champion : thoughest choice. Keep if you have an activator, if it's your only turn 2 or if you have a good curve without it (on the coin most likely) and hope to draw an activator.
- Faerie Dragon, Fiery War Axe, N'Zoth's First Mate : always keep.
General Tips
- vs hunter : you want to trade a lot, because of Houndmaster. Especially clear that 2/5 before it becomes a 4/7 taunt, even if it feels like spending a lot of ressources.
- vs chaman : be superconservative with fiery war axe and kokron elite, you want to save them for the wolves.
- Finley hero power : Mage or druid are the best. Hunter or warlock come second. You want warlock early game, late game it depends if you're close to lethal or lacking cards . You can pick dagger if you really don't have weapons. Tokens are not that helpful.
- See if you can hurt yourself for activating Mortal Strike and have lethal.
- Always play a minion over heroic strick if it doesn't die from the board. Do play heroic strike on curve as early as possible, that's less chance of it being blocked by a taunt.
- Count your damage in hand and on board from turn 4 and onward.
- You can always Upgrade! and Dread Corsair ! (1 mana, gives -1 one mana to it…)
- Play Azure Drake only as a very last resort.
- A dread corsair for more than 1 mana is not good value, play somethin else if you can.
Card swap
You can swap Acidic Swamp Ooze for Bash, Bloodsail Raider or Arathi Weaponsmith.
Leeroy Jenkins definetely is a finisher of choice too.
Other decks I used on my way up
I'm not one to play only one deck, I like to switch. I also used super solid Crane333's Patron (certainly one of the most solid decks around) and Tempo dragon warrior :

Play fun decks, create your own thing and stop grinding with that #1EU shaman deck until you burn yourself out hoping to get legend. Really, it's not worth it.
Any tips vs zoo? Tried the deck but got crushed by zoo, can't just go SMORc my way out
Trade a lot until you have your Reaper. It's a really a matchup where you want to trade a lot, especially to avoid a good argus. Now by turn 5/6 you ghould have start smorcing, or you'll run out of ressources.
why keeping N'Zoth's First Mate ?
Pirate, weapon, turn 1.
A bit more pirate doesn't hurt, althought it's rarely the one the who buffs your weapon. You really want to have a weapon equipped as often as possible. I upgraded the hook to ridiculous level more often than not. And it's the only T1 for an aggro deck, one that clears a lot of t1 and t2.
Overall excellent card. I tried with one and zero… I really want two.
Man, I just want to say THANK YOU for this deck. Today, 16-06-16, I took my first legend with this on EU. A lot of time and so many games, but it's working.
P.S. I replaced Acidic Swamp Ooze for Bloodsail Raider.
So glad it worked out for you !
solid deck, awesome guide. could you write a discription for your other dragonwarrior deck please? is it consistent?
You have a good guide here : http://www.hearthstonetopdecks.com/decks/tempo-dragon-warrior-60-7-winrate-from-rank-9-to-legend-deck-list-guide/
Glad you appreciate the deck !
Insane Deck! Love it! Quick question, do you play Alextrasza's Champion even you don't have an activator? Sometimes it feels it's a dead card when I don't have an activator.
That's hard to answer in general. If you can keep the tempo and keep it in hand, yes try to retain it. But that's the only way to fill the board and you are confident it doesn't die, or you want him to use an important removal, you can put it 2/3.
Don't forget to keep azure drake in hand if it's the only activator.
i played around with a similar deck, but it just seemed too short on dragons to get consistent use out of champion.
played 6 games with this, pretty much what i experienced with pirate/dragon deck when i made one earlier
went 5/1 but only played one game where i had any synergy between champions and dragons
That was happening to me too, so I tech'd in a commanding shout to get more draw. It also helps you trade and still maintain board.
I think I have a much greater rate of activating it, over quite a lot of games. I think the whole think is to mulligan and curve out while retaining as much activator as possible. I toss it away if I don't have activator, I keep azure drake if it's the only and I play faery only if I have really nothing else.
That being said, 2/3 for 2 is not terrible either.
It's not that bad against control war actually. But it's a matchup where you really want to go face like crazy. Maybe even floating 2 mana instead of armoring for the sake of getting under 12.
Thank you for sharing this deck!
I like the guide too. I replaced Sir Finley Mrrgglton with Big Game Hunter and the Acidic Swamp Ooze with Leeroy Jenkins. Im 9-1 with this deck now and i really like to play with it.
Cheers
Thanks a lot, glad you like it !
Hadn't thought of BGH, but I tried one exec at some point. It had some merits, but lacked some SMorC and tempo IMO. Meta depend choice I think.
Great deck! made it to rank 10 in like 2 hrs with just a few losses! I'm thinking about cutting out the ooze though. There are quite a lot of shaman and warrior, but i feel that even when you manage to ooze a weapon you don't get that much of a margin out of it. I'd like to push in another dragon in order to improve the sinergy with [card]Alexstrasza's Champion[/card] but there doesn't seem to be another decent dragon that fits the deck. The thing is that to be useful for the champion the extra dragon needs to be something that can be kept in the opening hand together with him so it would have to cost 4 or or less and i don't really think we want to use stuff like Dragonkin Sorcerer or Hungry Dragon! An option could be Drakonid Crusher but it's probably to expensive already.
Twilight Guardian?
