Welcome fellow mages,
I hit the legend rank with this deck on S28.
This deck contributed most on my way to legend and I think at the moment, with the absence of warriors, freeze mage is Tier 1 deck if you play it wisely. I hit the legend with a fast 5-0 run in rank 1 after grinding between rank 2-3 for a long time.
Game plan is simple but the deck is hard to play. You have to make careful and smart decisions since there are lots of Hunters equipped with flares and secret eaters. Almost everyone runs at least one Eater of Secrets. Even I saw one priest with double eater of secrets too...
In my journey this month games with this deck lasted about 10 to 12 rounds so you have to draw and ready your burst as fast as you can.
Mulligan is simple as it can be.
Always go with Mad Scientist, Loot Hoarder, Acolyte of Pain.
Frostbolt, Ice Lance and Forgotten Torch is also welcomed if you meet with fast decks. If you face with control decks you can keep Emperor Thaurissan.
About game plan, after 5th turn try to keep your health over 15. Use your freezing tools mindfully, I personally like to freeze with Blizzard first then use Frost Nova. This way you can combo Frost Nova with other cards.
Always count your damage, calculate next 2 turns ahead and play like the worst can happen next turn.
Keep your Ice Block in your hand until you are sure you are going to close the game in two turns. The dream defense is combining discounted Alexstrasza with Ice Block.
Same as always with Freeze Mage you have two main winning options:
1) Wait for Alex and hold the door while searching for 15 damage then end the game on turn 10-12
2) Collect burn spells early, smash the emperor discount your spells, then start freezing board and damaging your opponents untouched face with your discounted burst.
May the force be with you and don't forget to use your pings wisely!
Edit: After climbing to 5th rank meta gets slower so I exchanged loot hoarder with BMT cause he is much more flexible plus spell damage always give you the needed edge and NO he is NOT replaceable with kobold geomancer, you always need that extra card draw.
You can try Archmage Antonidas in a slower meta for more control orientated play or Malygos for surprising effect.
*Still using same deck. There are lots of pallys so this deck keeps on rocking! Waiting for Karazhan if something new will come up.
Glad I found this, actually started running Freeze Mage (wild) this season. nice to see it can reach the high ranks.
Any reason for no Cone of Cold? I've actually found the extra freeze pretty helpful, especially with Doomsayer.
That's all the differs in my list, it replaces Bloodmage Thalnos, as it don't own it.
Thanks for the guide.
PS: I find other mages pretty tough too, Counterspell gets my everytime
I prefer cone of cold on standart cause freezing board is more important there. Cycling cards is much more useful in wild meta but if you prefer defensive and more controlish play you can use cone of cold.
If you don't have BMT you can use loot hoarder for more cycle and a beginning threat (also you can draw with him using a ping on later turns)
For opening counterspell ice lance is your best friend since its the cheapest and less important spell against other mages.
Good luck conquering ladder you will enjoy the deck more the more you learn!
cool one mate^^
Thx enjoy
EASY. Eater of secrets! everyone runs one in wild due to secret paladins. get real
Yes. I wrote that BUT for an example everyone feels comfortable with an eater of secrets and you have 2 ice shield.
I never said this deck is easy to play or an autopilot deck. You have to learn how to play properly, think at least 1 turn ahead and always calculate damage you can do or done to yourself next turn.
Well sometimes I think about this too. Don't want to be that guy but after rows the best counter decks start to match with me or whenever I change my deck after a loosing streak best counter deck comes to make me more angry.
What are your best/worst matchups?
Best matchups are shaman, paladin (especially secret), zoo and priest, rogue (especially deathrattle type).
Hunter is like between 40/60-50/50 (how fast they start and mulligan defines course of game), other mages can be pain in the ass if they can discover you are a freeze mage early.
Worst match up is Warrior as always. Only you can defeat aggro type. I saw only two Warrior after 5th rank and defeated one so I was lucky or they are out of meta in EU. If you see too much patron type you can tech with flame strike and anton but beware of armorsmith and berserker. Armorsmith is their main shield mechanic and berserker is a power house If they draw it early. Kill these two ASAP! (even you can throw a fireball).
Easy legend, gg
Pyroblast is much more reliable in this meta. Anton is good but it needs one or two more rounds to ready the needed damage. If you face with a lot of control decks, Anton shines cause you can fill your hand with fireballs.
If you have Malygos you can suprise your opponents with extra damage with the help of emperor, but like Anton, sometimes you need to hold your opponent 1 or 2 more turns to ready the damage.
Replaced pyro with antonidas (cause i dont have it). Is it viable?
Pyroblast is better in my (and LaughingHS's, for what it's worth) opinion, mainly because it doesn't need to be combined with anything to deal damage.
You'd need to cast 2 spells with Antonidas on board for it to out damage Pyroblast, and we don't have the cheap spells that Tempo Mage does to ensure we get two or more fireballs before he inevitably gets killed on the next turn. You also can't afford to depend on Thaurissan ticks, since even if you do end up drawing him, you might want to save some of your spells.
All that said, he's definitely not terrible and easily the best substitution if you don't have a Pyroblast and want to try the deck.
