Here's one of the first decks I'll be trying when Karazhan is fully released: Dragon Paladin. BRM gave Paladin the incredible Dragon Consort, which cheapens your other dragons and allows you to make big plays that swing the game in your favor.
Karazhan has done a lot to enable this archetype, primarily with Netherspite Historian and Book Wyrm. Netherspite has a ~45% chance to give you the option of Dragon Consort, since class cards show up more often through discover, and this is the only dragon class card paladin has. Now, we can more consistently cheapen our bigger dragons and start chaining Consorts together for crazy tempo. The increased appearance of Consort also makes Book Wyrm much better. If you're able to play it for 4 mana, you just got a free SW:P effect off and a decent 4 drop.
Karazhan also introduced the Nightbane Templar, which a lot of people have been comparing to Muster for Battle. It provides similar amount of value, and can really help Paladin not get bullied in the early game.
This deck runs around 8 Dragons, which is around the same as Dragon Priest or Warrior , so it's pretty reasonable that you'll have activators for these cards when you need them. Admittedly, a lot of these cards are more expensive, but you'll have Paladin's control tools to sustain you, and Consort to slash prices.
I'm running one Forbidden Healing and a Lay on Hands, instead of two Forbbiden Healings. This may change back when I've played the deck a bit more, but the card draw seems more relevant than the massive heal. We'll have to see what the meta looks like post-release.
Since this deck is currently untested, there are a lot of other cards to consider that might improve the consistency of the deck, in certain meta climates. I've listed them below, as well as some changes you might want to make to the deck if running that tech:
- Chillmaw if you find you need more board clear.
- Harrison Jones If you're running into lots of weapons.
- Volcanic Drake synergizes really well with a Wild Pyromancer + Equality play, and with Solemn Vigil. You might also consider running Doomsayer to improve this combo.
- Sylvanas Windrunner is good if you're seeing a lot of C'thun or Yogg decks, since it counters those plays pretty hard.
- Justicar Trueheart is always good in Control decks, gives you more consistent board presence, and can enable to you make an equality clear if you've played it earlier in the game.
I'll be updating this deck as the month progresses, so check back in to see how Dragon Paly fares, and give it a try yourself!
Cool list, I'd be interested to try it out. Malygos doesn't seem quite right for this though. You only have 3 cards that can hit face, and one of them hits you too. I'd recommend swapping it for Ysera or Nefarian. You also may want to consider adding in a Sunfury Protector or Defender of Argus because this deck has very little heal/protecting capabilities.
Netherspite Historian may also not be right for this deck. It's a very slow card, and the only reason it's worth including in a Paladin deck is because of it's synergy with Dragon Consort. As I mentioned above, you have a ~45% chance of finding Dragon Consort, and the Consort effect will apply to any dragon you get out of the Historian. Getting a 7 Mana Nefarian that you didn't even have to put in your deck is preeeeettty good. You barely even lose tempo for playing a 5 mana 5/5.
Been playing a number of Dragon Paladin lists and I have found that it work better like this in my opinion:
-1 Forbidden Healing, -1 Solemn Vigil, -1 Lay on Hands, -1 Doomsayer, and -1 Wild Pyromancer. +1 Book Wyrm, +2 Faerie Dragon, +2 Ivory Knight.
Yes less healing, however, it should be enough if you combo Brann with Ivory Knight. Brann is also really good with Netherspite Historian which often offers extremely powerful legendary dragons.
I agree with you about a lot of these changes. I've updated the list, dropping Wild Pyromancer, Lay on Hands, and Doomsayer. I've replaced them with +1 Faerie Dragon, +1 Blackwing Technician, and +1 Ivory Knight. I've also swapped Ragnaros, Lightlord for Ragnaros the Firelord. This might change but I think OG Rag is much stronger in a dragon oriented deck.
Hmmm whats a good replacement for ragnaros the lightlord?
Ragnaros the Firelord is a better option IMO.
is Lay on Hands better or 2 x Holy Light ?
LOH, Holy light is straight booty
Yeah if you want to swap out Lay on Hands then I'd recommend Ivory Knight (a change I've made in the official list). It's better because it gives you some tempo, while generating a card and giving you a semi-random heal.
The real question here: Is Nightbane Templar really that much better than Blackwing Technician?
Templar is 2/3 + x2 1/1's (4/5 worth of stats) So while this is slightly better than Technician (3/5 worth of stats) the problem then comes, does having distributed stats and +1 attack worth the non distributed stats of Technician?
I guess that depends on the matchup. Against zoo/aggro decks that flood, you want the distributed stats early game to take out 1/1's, 2/1's and 2/2's. This means that playing templar on curve is most likely better. However, against midrange/control decks, you'll want the 3/5 body that can trade with other 3 or 4 drops and sometimes live.
The other question to consider, is the LOSS of stats when you have to play the card without a dragon proc. Templar becomes a 2/3 for 3, which is horrible. Technician becomes a 2/4 for 3, which while not great in the current state of the game, is at least "on curve" for vanilla stats. Overall, I think the Technician is a safer bet, but I'd love to hear other people's opinion on these two cards.
That's a pretty fair analysis. In the most recent list, I tech in one Technician to round out the early game. I think 2 Templars is better right now because of how many aggro/flood decks are popular in the meta. Technician is decent in either situation, so running one improves early game consistency.
Can't wait to try this deck. I miss mid range and this might be a fresh restart.
I was really excited about Scaled Nightmare when it came out, and I've tried to make it work a bunch of times, but it's just so...underwhelming. The 6 mana slot is already very contested, with great control cards like Sylvanas Windrunner, Justicar Trueheart, Emperor Thaurissan, and now Book Wyrm. There's even Drakonid Crusher if you wanted to take a more aggressive angle.
The main reason that Scaled Nightmare is bad is that it provides no immediate value gain, and doesn't provide enough board pressure to be worth its cost. It dies to all sorts of single target removal, which makes it even worse to invest resources into. Scaled Nightmare may have some potential when comboing with Dragon Consort, but I don't know if it'll be enough. I'll probably give it a try. The best use for it otherwise is as removal bait, imo, and you have other options that will net you more value.
I don't think we'll see Scaled Nightmare in any competitive deck until Priest gets totally broken in January and Dragon Priest becomes TIer 1 Kappa
Looks solid. I'll probably try this out once all the Karazhan cards are out. Will probably switch Ysera for Deathwing though since I don't have Ysera :P
Sylvanas Windrunner might still be the pick for the 6 drop slot, but I'm gonna try the new card out first and see how it goes.
I've been thinking about including Keeper of Uldaman in here...Let me know how it works out for you!
In my opinion, that's a very shallow analysis of Templar. Yes, it's a Razorfen with another 1/1, but third 1/1 is worth a lot more than you think. Having an additional body on board allows you to trade more efficiently against aggro decks and not get overwhelmed by their board, which is how control decks that aren't warrior lose.
You misunderstand the interaction with Johnny and I. I had initially posted this decklist in the midrange category. He was saying that the cards here made it seem much more like a control deck, and I agreed. He was not saying, nor do I agree with the notion, that Dragon decks have to be tempo oriented. The dragon cards here were picked specifically to control the board and generate cards. These were meant to synergize with Paladin's control tools to keep a board in check until you can play your big threats and win.
I'm also rather familiar with dragon decks. I have hundreds of wins with dragon warrior in WotOG, and I played plenty of dragon priest before that. The most popular dragon warrior list right now runs 8 dragons, 6 cards that require dragon activators, and is an aggressive/tempo style deck. This list runs 8-10 dragons (if you include Netherspite pulls), has 9 cards that require dragon activators (3 of which are dragons themselves), and is not an aggressive/tempo deck, meaning that it doesn't need to have the dragon combos as early on. Overall, the dragon synergy is definitely there, especially when you consider the cheapened dragon costs from consort.
I apologize if I seemed rude at all in this response. Some of your assumptions and generalizations irked me. I'm sure there will be some successful dragon tempo paladin, but that's not the deck that I'm making here. Try to keep an open mind when discussing cards that can't even be played yet and archetypes that are being expanded upon.
I wanted to make Brann work, but it was too situational for me. Same goes for Lay on Hands, what was always way too late to heal me. Book Wyrm is very interesting. I try to find a spot for it, `cause 3 or less attack minions are shown up a lot in the actual meta.
Mine is a bit greedy, but works very well so far (with Blackwing Technician instead of Nightbane Templar). What are your thoughts about this version (i also didn`t want to include Netherspite Historian, in this deck is already enough lategame potential. A second doomsayer helps a lot more): http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/557019-dragon-control-paladin
Seems like a solid list! If you have trouble with card draw and are running into a lot of weapon classes, I'd recommend Harrison Jones instead of Lay on Hands. It has the similar effect of preventing some damage and drawing cards, while providing board presence and being much less of a commitment in terms of mana. If you make this switch, swap the ooze for another low cost minion. Maybe a Faerie Dragon.
Brann Bronzebeard might work, it might not. Really not too sure yet how consistent it'll be in this deck, but using it with Blackwing Corruptor, Azure Drake, Dragon Consort, or even one of your buff dragons provides you with quite a bit of value.
Also, I might sound like a broken record here, but I think Netherspite Historian is going to be a lot more valuable as an early play when it's released. Getting a Dragon Consort from here and using it to chain together your dragons is going to be really powerful, especially when you can use it to play another Dragon Consort.
Interesting. Looks more like a control paladin more than a midrange one though. Equality + Wild Pyromancer/Consecration and Forbidden Healing scream "control deck" since they often get behind on board and then use massive comeback combos to hold on until they play their late game.
I don't like how there's only one Blackwing Corruptor. I feel like that card is better than Sylvanas Windrunner in terms of what this deck wants to do.
Edit: I also think we don't need Ysera because of the fact that we are probably going to get something big from Netherspite Historian
Good point about Blackwing Corruptor and Sylvanas Windrunner, I'll probably make that swap.
Ideally, you want to get Dragon Consort out of Netherspite Historian. It's got a 45% chance of showing up since its the only class card dragon, and gives your subsequent dragon turns better tempo. I'm going to keep Ysera, because potentially playing it cheapened turn 7 is insane, and we'll have anywhere from 2-4 consorts in our deck.
I might also swap out one of the Forbidden Healings. Haven't decided for what yet.
That's a good point. I might just not be wanting to have to finally craft ysera lol.
