1. intro
Hey everyone! I'm Acidz and I'm a Professional player for Sector One. I came up with a really solid patron list that catches most people by surprise. Together with Blauwedruif we have refined the list and tested it both to the point we are almost sure it’s optimal. (Any changes feel free to drop a comment).
Blauwedruif is a multiple legend player from the Netherlands and he is mainly going to write this guide. He used the deck to climb from rank 4 to legend, but we have a video from us 2 together getting legend from rank 3 on my stream. (In the Video section).
So why is this deck a "Surprise Patron" deck?
Well the main body of this deck is similar to the well-known Worgen OTK warrior. In this deck there is no combo (faceless, worgen, charge and rampage) and the differences are the Patrons, Grommash, Whirlwinds and Yogg Saron. While playing, your opponent will recognise your deck as an OTK warrior and will play differently than they would play if they knew it was patron. The result of this is that they waste a lot of removal cards to get rid of boards that are big for an OTK warrior. But even with the knowledge of the patrons it’s extremely hard to keep up with a deck that draws this much and has the lord and saviour when needed!
One really good example of this can be seen on this twitch broadcast from Neirea: Neirea vs Me https://www.twitch.tv/neirea/v/82433173# It starts at 01:14:20; you see him play his turn before the "Surprise". He completely overloaded himself and played on of his biggest removal spells. This gave me the perfect opportunity to unleash my patrons. If he would have known I played a patron list instead of OTK he probably would have changed his line of play in that turn. Also, his reaction is priceless.

4. Strategy
The strategy with this deck is straightforward. You just draw as much as possible early game while also clearing the board, much like OTK warrior. In mid-game we try to overwhelm (and surprise) the opponent with a patron board. Late game we try and refill the board with maybe a second wave or multiplying the patrons already in play. We are gonna provide you with a couple of simple tips to get you started with the deck!
Tip 1: Try holding on to the Commanding Shout till you get the wildpyro to make a board clear, unless if it gets you really good trades or it duplicates some of your patrons.
Tip 2: Executes are usually reserved for big threats, but using them to get a better board state to go for a set of patrons on the following turn is no mistake.
Tip 3: If you have the choice to play Emperor Thaurissan or patrons, it is recommended to look at your hand and see what benefits you the most, because being able to fit in an extra execute or battle rage in the patron turn might be crucial.
Tip 4: Against aggro try to get the fullest out of the armorsmith, this means playing it with a lot of minions and whirlwinds or very early in the game to stall; after turn 3 it loses its value to fight on the board.
5. Stats and Matchups
Good matchups:
As you can see in the stats from Blauwedruif, Token druid and Zoo Warlock are the best matchups. Also against other popular ladder decks it performs pretty good, it has a 75% win rate against Midrange Hunter, with a small game poule though, but it’s still 75%. You are also favoured against the most played deck on ladder now, Dragon Warrior.
Bad matchups:
Unfortunately Aggro Shaman is still out there, and that is one of the harder matchups, because they just dont give you the time to surprise them with your patrons. A teched in Armorsmith and a good curve can help you to survive against this deck untill you are able to develop patrons and seal the game. The control matchups aren’t that great either; Warrior who has Brawl, Priest who has Excavated Evil, and Warlock who has Hellfire. Luckily those decks aren’t played that much, and on top of that, it’s possible to cycle really fast into your patrons and overwhelm your opponent while he can’t react to it. So the matchup isn’t unwinable, it’s just a tough one.
Conclusion:
So the win rates are almost the same as the win rates from OTK Worgen Warrior, it has the same good matchups (except this deck struggles against renolock) and the same bad matchups, but Surprise Patron seems to perform much better against Midrange Hunter and Dragon Warrior wich is more common right now!

7. Video
This is the VOD where we (me and BlauweDruif) go from rank 3 to legend with a score of ...
Old deck, but in this meta pretty good. Nice.
Great deck! Just reach my 1st legend with it from 4 rank. Thanks a lot!
So close to legend. Hopefully will get it soon enough. I don't have Grom or Yogg so I'm using another armorsmith and Rafaam.
I got consistently demolished in every ranked game. Every deck had a good board clear once I had Patron down. I tried to play around it, but I couldn't!
This is a challenging deck to play, but boy is it ever fun!
I subbed grommash with ragnaros because it's what I've got
Warrior is not one of my preferred classes but I crafted a second commanding shout for this deck.
Totally worth it. Drawing all the cards! Heh.
Thanks for the decklist!
Good deck, I went from rank 5 to rank 3 with score 13/4.I changed yogg saron for ragnaros. Most of games were against hunters and deck is very good against them.I also won 2/2 games against aggro shaman ;)
Ive been trying this deck 2 days now, and im kinda strugling with it. I feel like i need Brawl in deck, since im often getting overvelmed with enemy minions. Clearing them with card require too much spells to be used and often i leave myself without Patron combo after. Anyone else sharing same thoughts? And if so, what card could i change to put Brawl instead? If not, what am i doing wrong?
Thanks
The problem with brawl in this deck is that if it would get good value than you've probably already lost or could have won. Remember that most of your whirlwind effects and things like blood to ichor are going to be used to clear board. You only need a couple of them to fill your board with patrons, so if you save them you will likely get overrun. You need to secure board early on and then focus on card draw. Brawl doesn't fit in this kind of deck because it would weaken your early game, be a significant tempo-loss mid-game, and likely be a dead card/have no affect late game. IMO, by adding brawl into your deck you are increasing the chance that you would need to use it, which kinda defeats the purpose.
I don't know what you specifically are doing wrong, probably a combination of things, but it could also just be the decks you are running into. Fast and slow decks usually beat patron, but it shines against midrange type decks, or any deck that relies on board control. Just keep playing and you'll get better.
Cursed Blade kappa
I tried Kor'kron Elite or Frothing Berserker but Grommash is really hard to replace
Thanks so much for the guide acidz and blauwedruif! I never tried the legend grind before, but I decided to give it a shot with your deck since it was so much fun to pilot. After quite a few attempts, I made it to legend! I recorded 31 -18 (63%) from rank 3 to legend on the NA server. I'd say that the hardest challenge for me was to get past control decks (cthun warrior, control warrior, renolock, nzoth pally), but if you throw your win conditions at them asap, sometimes it works. The easiest matchup was hunter (5-0) and most midrange decks. And surprisingly, I did okay against aggro shaman by maximizing value of blood to ichor, slam, aoe, and armorsmith. I originally questioned the deck's use of yogg because the cycle is already so strong and after turn 10 you'll be close to fatiguing, but I realized that yogg can create winning situations where there was none. Again, fantastic deck!
First time I tried this deck, I drew 28 cards without drawing a single patron. The despair :(
Awesome deck.
I am currently at rank 14 and went 5 - 0 with it.
I don't have grom though so I used gorehowl
What is the best replacement for gromm i dont have ragnaros
I have been using gorehowl since 7d for 7m is close to 10d for 8m and it doesn't require an activator.
Coolest deck right now... how long were you guys tinkering with this before it went live? It's especially amazing as it doesn't even use any kara-cards, this stuff has been here all year... it just goes to show there might still be decks in the the card pool that no one has thought of yet.
never used twitch before, can I turn up the quality of the video?
Replacement for Gromash?
I would probably replace it with Rag. I don't have a Grommash Hellscream as well and am going to use Ragnaros the Firelord to see how it works.
Can i replace [card]Yogg-Saron, Hope's End[/card] in this decl?)) plss
