Hey guys! My name is ReneSin, and today, I have an amazing Control type hunter deck for you!
It's incredibly fun, and has had amazing results so far, but I have yet to test the deck out a little more and fine tune as well as finalize some of my card choices.
Card Choices:
*Note: These cards are not the absolute final, but rather my current choices (Updated for August 30th, 2016)*
Hunter’s Mark: Just a given removal card in any Control Hunter deck. Has excellent synergy with Wild Pyromancer and Unleash the Hounds.
Sir Finley Mrrgglton: An excellently adaptive card. This card can help you draw cards, heal up, and clear minions, depending on the situation. Also, it synergizes with The Curator as well.
Bloodmage Thalnos: This card synergizes with many of your damage spells to give you that extra “umph” when clearing minions or dealing damage to the face. It helps you cycle, as well as have synergy with N’zoth, the Corruptor.
Explosive Trap: One of the main ways to clear the board. One tip with this card is to try to not be so obvious that you’re setting up a board that clears with this card.
Freezing Trap: I found this card an excellent way to deal with powerful minions (or really buffed up ones). This includes cards such Flamewreathed Faceless, Sylvannas Windrunner, and Tyrion Fordring.
Kindly Grandmother: As I stated to play out my games, I started to realize that having a somewhat stable early game is absolutely crucial in order to keep the board state in check. Also, it has beast synergy, it's sticky, and has synergizes with Barnes.
King’s Elekk: With so many high-cost cards in this deck, it’s quite likely that this early-game beast will help you cycle through your cards. It can give information about your opponent’s deck. An overall solid choice.
Loot Hoarder: An early-game deathrattle minion that helps you cycle through your deck. Also, it has some synergy with N’zoth, the Corruptor.
Quick Shot: Two mana deal three damage removal card is just good.
Wild Pyromancer: With so many spell cards, Wild Pyromancer gives that board clear that this deck needs so desperately. I rarely just drop this as an early game minion, but it is a possibility.
Animal Companion: Three mana spell, beast synergy, and a solid early game minion.
Deadly Shot: This card was a surprisingly efficient way to remove big minions, or minions which are difficult to clear. Solid choice.
Eaglehorn Bow: This is a staple three mana weapon that almost all hunter decks run. It also has synergy with two traps.
Powershot: An efficient, cheap board removal. A very prized card in this deck.
Unleash the Hounds: An effective means of clearing zoo type boards. It can also serve as a nice damage boost for a potential lethal situation.
Barnes: With so many deathrattle cards along with cards with powerful effects such as Ragnaros the Firelord. Also, it’s a four drop, which this deck lacks.
Houndmaster: Another recent addition with the realization of so many beasts. I noticed that this deck severely lacked four drops, as well as an effective means of gaining taunt. This card seemed like an excellent way to gain both options.
Infested Wolf: A solid, sticky, four-drop beast that synergizes with The Curator, N’zoth, the Corruptor, as well as Houndmaster.
Azure Drake: The main reason I added this card was because it had not only spell damage and card draw, but it also came with the “dragon” tag. It synergizes well with The Curator, but it would’ve been a solid choice even without the “dragon” option.
Harrison Jones: With so many weapons being played in the game, this card has seen a lot of light in the game. Though it tends to be a weak stated minion on its own, it still is a big enough card to serve as somewhat of a threat.
Corrupted Seer: WHAT? This deck seems troll now. Hear me out. With the absence of Baron Geddon, I desperately needed some reliable board clear. I considered many alternatives such as adding Explosive Shot back, and I even pondered adding Abomination at one point. This card is actually very good when you think about it. For six mana, you will be able to reliably recover the board advantage and play a 2/3 minion at the same time. The Curator will be able to pull this card from your deck, which adds overall consistency to the deck.
Reno Jackson: This card is what makes the deck so special. I have considered many other control options such as Soggoth the Slitherer and Alexstraza, but they were just simply too expensive for their effects. Reno Jackson is probably the best way to make aggressive decks give up.
Savannah Highmane: This gigantic beast is such a large threat, and a sticky minion to deal with. Synergizes with Barnes, The Curator, and N’zoth, the Corruptor, so I just couldn’t resist putting it in.
Sylvanas Windrunner: Does this card need much of an explanation? A very popular and powerful deathrattle card that can boggle your opponent’s mind as they try to deal with it. Often times, they’ll run two large minions into this card in order to avoid it from getting anything stolen away. Simply a solid card.
Chillmaw: Why is this card in the deck? There's only one other dragon! Yes, although it seems very unorthodox, this card has some other aspects which make it a great addition. Firstly, it's a dragon. This means that The Curator can draw it, and you can get more value from the card. Secondly, it has potential board clear deathrattle. Having a deathrattle means synergy with Barnes as well as N'Zoth, the Corruptor. Last, but certainly not least, this card has taunt. One of the key ingredients of a Control deck which this deck lacks is a fair number of minions which will forcefully prevent your opponent from attacking your face. Add those components all in one, and you get an awesome card to add in the deck EVEN IF you may not have the number of dragon cards to proc the deathrattle.
Gladiator’s Longbow: Having weapons in a control deck is really important. Gladiator’s Longbow helps to remove some really large threats, as well as destroy powerful five health minions such as Sylvanas Windrunner, Fandral Staghelm, and Violet Teacher. I really like having this card, as you don’t really need to worry about how much damage you’re going to take when trading with a minion.
The Curator: It’s like the pre-nerf Ancient of Lore, but situationally better! It offers a taunt, as well as excellent card draw, which makes it a solid card to add in this deck.
Call of the Wild: This card is just really, really good. For eight mana, you can deal five damage right off the bat, and still have two reasonably powerful minions on the board. An excellent choice of a card.
Ragnaros the Firelord: This large minion can single-handedly win games if left alone. A huge threat on board if left alone, and can be used to even deal eight damage straight to the opponent’s face.
N’zoth, the Corruptor: This card is a major win-condition. Don’t wait until you have all six deathrattle minions to proc off of this card, as just two or three really powerful deathrattle cards can help you win the match.
Some Honourable Mentions/ Cards to Ponder About:
Elise Starseeker: This four drop can help this deck win more consistently against many control match ups. If you’re facing a lot of control, then this card is definitely a solid addition.
Explosive Shot: This large removal is really good at taking out big threats as well as clear some small minions off the board. It also acts as a nice substitution for Gladiator's Longbow. However, it has had the downside of being too expensive for most situation, so I have chosen to not put this card in.
Cairne Bloodhoof: This minion was mainly not added in this deck because it lacked the threat component. Though it is really good, it ONLY has synergy with N’zoth, the Corruptor, and did not offer an immediate threat that many of the other cards had.
Kill Command: I'm not really sure whether this card helps out or hurts this deck archetype. Though Kill Command can really give a boost in damage, as well as an option for removal, it's just far too expensive and conditional for it to be consistently good. However, if you're really lacking cards, then this may be a cheap alternative.
Baron Geddon: This card has been a notorious board clear/ threat card in Control Warrior decks, so I originally thought that this was an excellent card. However, the more games I played, the more I realized the threat that this card posed towards the Control Hunter archetypes. Control hunters are unable to heal up or regain their health, so every bit of it matters. Paying a seven mana cost along with the expense of two health is way too costly for the desired effect of a two damage board clear. It is an effective threat against other Control decks, though.
Stampeding Kodo: This beast was originally a must-add in this deck. It offered decent stats as well as a nice effect against some decks. However, I have realized that usually, minions with two attack or less should not have survived the board until turn five, and if they have, you need much more drastic turn arounds then simply clearing one minion off at a time. It can be a good card in some situations though.
Cheers!
So I have Yogg-Saron, Hope's End in my version of this deck, and it has saved me a couple of games that we into fatigue... I notice you subbed the Kill Command with Houndmaster, which would definitely take a hit on Yogg's effectiveness. Also, any reason why you pulled the Kill Command and not the Quick Shot?
Did you run this deck with Yogg before, cuz I'm not totally sure how I ended up with him in there, but I do actually like having him as a backup. I guess at this point Yogg is essentially my sub for Chillmaw, but he obviously synergizes well with the Kill Command, so I'm cautious to pull that card for the Houndmaster.
Any thoughts on this sort of odd substitution of Kill Command+Yogg for Houndmaster+Chillmaw? O
Ok I think I realize your situation here.
Yogg-Saron, Hope's End and Kill Command can definitely find themselves into this deck, because while my list is very delicate, it has so many substitution options possible. I just found that Kill Command was far too situational in the early game phases, where I would have to spend three mana just to deal damage if I didn't have a beast, so I put in a minion for consistency.
I will warn you that when you take out both Houndmaster and Chillmaw, you will have to be that much more proactive in order to make sure that you take as least damage as possible, as you will suffer from a severe decrease in the number of taunts you have. Maybe Yogg-Saron, Hope's End would be a better form of Chillmaw's board clear capability in really desperate situations?
Anyways, I would try it out first, then tell me if it ended up working out well. If not, tell me some of the problems which you faced, and I'd be happy to help with card choices.
Awesome deck, definitely a lot of fun to play!
Started off 0-2, was getting discouraged and switched [card]Baron Geddon[/card] with Corrupted Seer, and proceeded to win the next 6 games in a row. Thanks for the fun deck.
edit - Ah you've changed it slightly since I've seen it last. You've switched out Stampeding Kodo for Chillmaw, and Baron Geddon with Corrupted Seer already?
Ahaha. Yes! The changes have already been made. :D
I'm glad that you're having success with the deck. I'm very thankful for the support.
If I want to add a Chillmaw, which card should I remove?
Hmm... See, I was wondering the same thing. Maybe replacing Baron Geddon would affect the deck least negatively? Let me know how it goes!
Take a look at the recent change I've made to the deck. I feel that it's a little more consistent now. Let me know how the changes feel!
Yes, seems better now. Two dragons, two murlocs and some beasts.
Great!
May craft Longbow but what are replacements for it?
I suggest Explosive Shot.
Trying leeroy atm
Seems like an interesting idea. Tell me how it goes!
If you have the time would love to get your thoughts on some replacements:
Baron Geddon and Gladiator's Longbow? I went with a Kindly Grandmother and Deathwing. Would've preferred probably a Cairne Bloodhoof, but I don't have it.
A couple others I'm missing are Powershot which I subbed Explosive Shot and Harrison Jones with Acidic Swamp Ooze.
Let me know if you think there are better replacements. Thanks a ton! Super fun deck, and been having really good success so far. Just experimenting in casual right now, but most games are honestly complete blow outs.
Those seem like fair replacements, though playing with Deathwing can be a dangerous gamble. The reason for Baron Geddon is because this deck does not have too much board clear (hence the reason for a less costly board clear such as Powershot instead of Explosive Shot)
Acidic Swamp Ooze is definitely the best replacement for Harrison Jones.
Believe it or not, I really like Gladiator's Longbow in this deck because it's a nice way to deal with threats such as Sylvanas Windrunner, Fandral Staghelm, and Violet Teacher. Plus, it's another weapon!
If I had to replace it, I would use Explosive Shot instead. Though Kindly Grandmother is a sticky deathrattle minion, I would rather like to have more dominant presence on the board with my minions.
I don't know about Cairne Bloodhoof, as I'm not sure what I would replace and how it would fit in this deck (though it is a fairly powerful deathrattle card as well as synergistic with N'Zoth, the Corruptor and Barnes).
Anyways, these are just my suggestions, I'm glad you're enjoying the deck though! Thanks for the support!
Yeah I realized this about Deathwing a bit later... Really just a dead card because there's never really a time you can afford to dump your entire hand. I ended up subbing in Yogg-Saron, Hope's End, and he's not great, but it's an ok late-game panic button (or the perfect way to lose a game that you are already winning! :)
I find Kindly Grandmother and Explosive Shot to actually be super useful, so I think I'm just going to craft the Powershot. Was toying with the idea of Drakonid Crusher or Corrupted Seer for the Curator synergy, but I totally see the value in Gladiator's Longbow, so I might end up crafting it.
Thanks again for the list and the reply, one of the most fun decks I've played with in a while!
Yeah! Glad you found your ways! Maybe I'll try out Kindly Grandmother as well. :D
Yes! In fact, that was the main inspiration behind this deck. Though the Renogg Hatson list is really cool, I felt that it lacked the consistency, and with the One Night in Karazhan expansion coming, I saw the perfect opportunity to make some drastic changes.
Barnes accompanied with these minions can have really nice effects, and the Curator helped me cycle through the deck much more easily, as well as pull up Sir Finley Mrrgglton, even if it was a bit late in the game.
N'Zoth, the Corruptor was simply a more predictable win condition, and to be quite frank, 5 deathrattle minions are scary enough, and fill up the board pretty well.
While playing around with the Renogg Hatson list, I felt that the Explorer's Hat was quite an effective counter to some other Control decks, especially against Mages who were setting up the board for Flamestrike (And it's just amazingly fun)
Try the deck out, and if it doesn't work out for you, please feel free to tell me some problems that you were facing!
Let me just address the issue about your question about what this deck does better than other control decks.
While I see your point with the argument about "focus", Control Hunter deck archetypes simply cannot play like the most other Control decks.
They lack the cheap and efficient removal card unlike Warriors and Priests, and do not have the capability to heal themselves up in times of danger.
They do not have large board clears like Mages or Paladins, and they sure cannot survive until their late game burst combo reliably.
Yet, this is what makes playing Control Hunters so unique! Hunters are usually known for their constant pressure with sticky beast minions or outright rushing the enemy with aggressive charge minions (Of course this is from the popularity of Midrange and Aggro Hunter). The fact of the matter is, against other control decks, this deck will play out just like these aggressive decks, which forces your opponent into making uncomfortable trades. This way, when the late-game threats hit, you've constantly pressured your opponent, and Reno Jackson is ready to heal you up if the opponent is preparing to burst you down, and N'Zoth, the Corruptor is also ready to give your opponent a tough time.
Though it may seem like the deck lacks focus, it really is a delicate style of play.
P.S. I like your take on the Renogg Hatson list with the secrets, especially the incorporation of Avian Watcher.
Totally get what you mean. Nice having this discussion!
