MeetMrHahn's Secret Mage
Looking for something new/different? Try this! I have had a ton of feedback from other players and have tweeked this deck to what I think is a fierce competitor in the current meta.
I used to love Secret Mage in Standard when there was Mad Scientist. Now from the latest Hearth-Adventure Secret Mage is back and stronger than ever!
Strategy:
Trade with spells, deal damage with creatures, and protect your Ethereal Arcanist's if possible. Counterspell has worked wonders in this meta for me and so two copies are absolutely necessary. They protect your Ethereal Arcanist's and bigger creatures, mess up your opponents plans, and if you are lucky you may even prevent a Call of the Wild (nothing feels better)! Ice Block cab be good early so that you have it for a base for both Medivh's Valet and Ethereal Arcanist and it's not going to disappear before you can get their buffs. Either control the board and crush your opponent early, or keep the area clear to then dominate the board with Medivh, Ragnaros, and Yogg.
Why not _________?
Avian Watcher: This card is just hasn't worked for me. If you don't have a secret its useless. If you have a secret in your hand, then it's a 8 cost turn to get them both down. Just not worth it in comparison to what other cards offer.
Effigy
Effigy can backfire lots early game being used on your 1/2 cost creatures and can be a waist of a card waiting for the late game. Found the other secrets more beneficial.
Cone of Cold
I used to play this in this deck, and I had a hard time getting rid of it. It was good to keep minions off your Ethereal Arcanist and clear small minions from aggro decks. All and all though, it was a card that only was useful part of the time and I found Babbling Books just to be too good to this deck.
Ethereal Conjurer
This card I still think could be useful in this deck if you really wanted it. It can be a hard hit on your opponent if it is left untouched, and provides synergy to playing spells. I just couldn't find a card to trade for it that was less useful. If this deck had 31 cards, this would be it.
If you have any questions or comments please comment below and thank you everyone for all your feedback! Special shout out to Fur0 for making a feature video.
Below are my updates and to show my process of building this deck:
*Update #1: -1 Mirror Entity, -1 Ice Block, +1 Counterspell, +1 Babbling Book
Reason: Babbling Book gives the deck a little more tempo early and is still ok to get late game. Counterspell has worked extremely well for me, just make sure you use it after they use their coin. I find Mirror Entity is the number one secret your opponent predicts and then you end up with a 1 cost creature, so one is enough. Ice Block I love, but there was a couple times where I've played one and then the other sits in my hand for the majority of the match so I've been trying using only one and it has been working better.
*Update #2: -1 Ethereal Conjurer -1 Cone of Cold, +1 Yogg-Saron, Hope's End, +1Babbling Book
Reason: Babbling Book has done wonders for this deck since one copy has been added, and so I decided that it just needs two. It has given me secrets often or just the right card in times of need. Yogg-Saron, Hope's End I have tested a number of times to see if it fits. At first I thought it was too much of a random factor that it would just be a high cost card sitting in your hand, only to find out that when you finally play it leaves you disappointed. There was already some pricey cards, so I didn't know if there was a need for it. After trialing him in it though I wouldn't take him out. The people in the comments were right, Yogg-Saron, Hope's End has a place is in this and completes the deck to make it something beautiful. I find most games with this deck either end right away because you got the early board and controlled every outcome, or you go way late game seeing who has the bigger punch. Yogg is perfect to tip the odds in your favour if you are down.
*Update #3: -1 Yogg-Saron, Hope's End, +1 Ethereal Conjurer
Reason: Ya, after all that they nerfed Yogg. Now it's just not quite enough to tip the odds in your favor, so I took him out and put in Ethereal Conjurer because he has a chance a getting a secret and works with the overall synergy of the deck. Do you have a suggestion instead? Let me know on the comments below! This deck has been working even better than before in the current meta, and IMO is one of the better Mage decks out there. Share your success!
I have won against all of the current aggro decks out there from ranks 10-5, but I will admit, it does take some luck and I haven't won every time. What you need is to either get Ethereal Arcanist after a Kirin Tor Mage combo or last until the turn 7 wipe with Flamestrike and then start bring larger threats for them to deal with. Ice block and ice barrier are good to keep your head afloat and if you can keep trading then they sure can get in trouble late game.
Sure, you can win with every deck against every other deck if you draw exactly right, but Ethereal Arcanist + Kirin + secret is already combo on priest level. Sounds cool, never works.
i dont know about your skills, but i just destroyed a hunter in round 8.. with no special luck on draw.. was a quiet easy match for rank 5
I've never commented on anything before but this deck is super fun and I've gone 25-8 with it thusfar. Very refreshing to play something that's not common in the meta, and it ends up with some ridiculous interactions and plays. The amount of times I've gotten a Summoning Stone from the Firelands Portal or Atiesh + Cabalist's tome has been ludicrous, and the shenanigans that ensue are hilarious.
10/10 will keep playing, keep up the awesome work.
EDIT: and yeah as others have said, the main problem for me has been Hunters. But Counterspelling a Call of the Wild feels great.
Glad you like it! Against hunter it's a matter of dealing with its creatures and getting in damage where you can with your creatures. Mana Wurm, Babbling Book, Sorcerer's Apprentice and Kirin Tor Mage (with secret) are what you want to go for. Keep Ethereal Arcanist only if you have Ice Block, Kirin Tor Mage (with the hope you draw a secret) or Counterspell because the other secrets you will likely lose. Medivh's Vallet is usually way more useful late game, so I never keep him, however if you have him turn two and have nothing else, then play him. Use your hero power to burn its bats early game. Flamestrike can be devastating for hunter and so can a counterspell for its spells that summon creatures. Usually I win by Ethereal Arcanist taking over because a counterspell protected him from their only kill spell, or keeping the board clear until I get big power houses like Medivh or Ragnaros. Hope that helps!
Great deck idea, but I really wanted to have a Yogg in the deck so I killed one of the Counterspells for him! Yogg is a strong card in a deck like this, why aren`t you considering him?
Some gameplay: VOD Secret Mage
Thanks for the feature video! Glad it is working out for you. I have had a lot of people ask for my opinion on Yogg, so I will share my thoughts soon and be including a full update!
love this deck
replacement for rag? its the only card i'm missing
If you have a big Legendary that has a tempo swing like Sylvanas.
I'd say try experimenting with a few replacements. It is intended for that tempo swing and to keep pressure on your opponent but it doesn't necessarily have to be a high cost spell. A second babbling book, or water elemental may help your odds earlier game.
Arcane Giant
If anyone was wondering it is terrible against renolock -______-
yes, warlock decks have been my biggest struggle too. A second water elemental, cone of the cold, or adding a blizzard may help against these decks.
I love this deck. It's very fun to use and I feel like it could definitely have potential to be a meta deck.
Curator and Scarab were both good additions but Firelands Portal has great sinergy with Medivh's Atiesh weapon so I wouldn't remove it, ever. 5 damage + 5 mana minion + 7 mana minion for 7 mana is too good to pass up.
Cool deck!
Water Elemental is better than Ethereal Arcanist in almost every situation imho. I'm working on a similar deck, and made the switch.
edit: Also, Medivh, the Guardian, while being an extremely fun card, is quite slow, probably too slow.
Thanks! Ya, Water elemental is great! That's a fair switch. He has high health and freezes creatures to defend your ethereal arcanist. That would for sure work. I love mehdivh though and wouldn't take him out. He has won it for me the majority of times. This deck isn't meant to be speedy but trade with spells, deal some damage, wreck your opponents plans, until you can typically get medivh and control the board after using a firelands portal or flamestrike. the ethereal arcanists have won it a few times for me but typically they are to freak your opponent out to waist all their resources to rid it. If you can last until medivh though, you've probably got it in the bag.
This deck looks similiar to one i had today, however if I upload it now ppl will prob accuse me of stealing or something. Except my deck has random cards in like alchemist and zerus, faceless minions, but they actually work. http://prntscr.com/cdakmc
