I want to thank my friend ryshoe#1938 for helping me improving this deck to the current version. It took us a lot of discussion to reach this version, which is working very well from rank 5 to rank 3 (65% winrate for the games above rank 5).
Card Choices:
Maelstrom Portal: It is great for early game board control (kills N'Zoth's First Mate, Southsea Deckhand and Patches the Pirate) and at least provides a body for buff or flametongue in midgame
Coldlight Oracle: The minions of this deck are mostly cheap, so we need this card to sustain in midgame. Don’t get worried that this also gives your opponent cards. We can often use this card to find lethal.
Doomsayer: The early 1 drop and 2 drop minions of this deck usually cannot compete with the early game of decks such as pirate warrior (1/1 charge with 1/3 weapon instant kill our minions) and midrange shaman (Tunnel Trogg and Totem Golem kill everything). So we use doomsayer to clear the board on turn 2 and gain the board initiation since most murloc synergies require murlocs on board. But if you are uncomfortable with this card or you are not sure how to use it optimally, you can replace them with 2 Lightning Storm.
Mana Tide Totem: It helps you sustain against slower matchups. And it can often bait a 3 damage removal so they might not be able to remove warleader later.
Finja, the Flying Star: The card itself is very strong, 5 mana with soft taunt and usually secured 2 murlocs pull. It is a way to refill vs slower decks. The murlocs pulled can reduce the cost of Everyfin is Awesome. It is not a must include. If you don’t have this card, you can replace it with second Mana Tide Totem.
Why no Grimscale Oracle: In my opinion this is a fine card, but not great (you can find it in my screenshots as I was running them previously). As a 1/1 body, you need at least 2 murlocs on board to get the value of an Abusive Sergeant so it is not a strong turn 1 play. But when you have 2 or more murlocs on board, it’s definitely after turn 2, when you can already play Coldlight Seer or Murloc Warleader. So this card is fine if you don’t run Doomsayer.
Why no Blowgill Sniper: This is total garbage. I saw people running it probably just because it is a murloc. If we use this to deal 1 board damage, Maelstrom Portal is absolutely better as it’s an aoe and it can potentially give you better body than a 2/1. If we use this to deal 1 face damage, Bluegill Warrior beats this card a thousand times as it can deal 4+ damage to face with Murloc Warleader or Flametongue Totem.
Mulligans: In most situations, we keep an aggressive hand if we have one, especially if we have Murloc Tidecaller and [card]Sir finley Mrrgglton[/card]. If we have the coin with a 1 drop minion, we can also keep a Coldlight Seer or a Murloc Warleader. If we have both Murloc Tinyfin and Coldlight Seer, keep them.
Strategy against common decks:
Pirate warrior: Against pirate warrior we need to play very carefully and calculate meticulously since every single health matters (you can see from my screenshots that I am often below 10 health when I win). Usually we try to get heal, armor or fireblast from Sir Finley Mrrgglton (never pick life tap against aggro). Keep Doomsayer and Maelstrom Portal. If we have both Murloc Tidehunter and Bilefin Tidehunter in hand, we should play murloc tidehunter early on and save bilefin for later when we win the board. The 1/1 taunt can often save you 5+ health from Arcanite Reaper or even Leeroy Jenkins if warrior doesn’t have minions on board.
Renolock: Keep an aggro hand if you have, if not keep Doomsayer, Coldlight Oracle (mill is fun!) and Mana Tide Totem. In an aggro situation, turn 4 is a key turn, keep about 3 or 4 minions on board and make sure we can refill the board after hellfire. If he doesn’t have hellfire, fill the board as much as you can, since he doesn’t have a strong play on turn 5. Keep in mind turn 6 is potentially Reno Jackson or Felfire Potion. But you can’t always be timid and try to play around aoes as renolock has 6 aoes and we need to take the risk sometimes. However, if your opening is not strong and you don’t think you can beat him under 5 on turn 5, play as a combo deck and use doomsayer, manatide to stall.
Priest: Very favored match up. Priest is the only class against which we can keep a Flametongue Totem in hand if we have other minions to play. Right now priest is so easy to beat with this deck. Dragon priest typically doesn’t run 5 mana aoe, and we can often kill them before they can use Dragonfire Potion.
Druid: Extremely favored match up. Druid is the only class against which we can keep Everyfin is Awesome in hand during mulligan. And if we have everyfin you can also keep Murloc Tinyfin. Basically playing druid is “I play everyfin and I win”. On turn 2 we can start to put pressure and they have to decide whether they remove on turn 2 or Wild Growth. Swipe is the only card to play around and there is not much else to worry about.
Shaman: Unfavored match up. Mulligan hard for Doomsayer. Without it, your only other win condition is early board control. If you can get a sticky board, aggro shaman loses. Midrange shaman can only be beat early.
Tips:
Bluegill Warrior is primarily used to trade in faster matchups, and only to go face later on.
Coldlight Oracle after you build a large board to increase chances of an everyfin or warleader.
Murloc Warleader should be used usually as a mini Bloodlust or help trading. Playing it only to have it removed is a waste of resources.
Do not be greedy with Doomsayer, killing 1 minion is fine.
THIS DECK IS NOT ALWAYS AGGRO. You are allowed to totem turn 2 instead of playing a Murloc Tidehunter to set up for a later combo.
I hope you will enjoy this deck and if you have any questions or suggestions please post in comments.
I changed 1 Maelstrom Portal with Prince Malchezaar and everything is awesome (:
I changed 1 Doomsayer with 1 Lightning Storm and it plays pretty good.
Played around 20 games, lost only to 3 renomages and 2 rouges.
Amazing deck.
I feel that you can somehow squeeze in 2 Evolve + 2 Doppelgangster for another win condition...
I'm short of 1 Murloc Warleader and 1 Coldlight Oracle, any better replacement? Since, I rarely play murloc hence dont 'feel like crafting it.. Thanks..
I love the deck, I just seem to get shredded on ladder using it... It's so weird compared to other merlon decks I've played where you curve out then burst. How do I mulligan against reno mages and rogues, I have run into a ton of those recently and always seem to get destroyed.
Is The Mistcaller a bad idea here? To add to the deck?
OOOH IT'S SLIGHTLY DAMP NOW!!!
Started playing the deck a few days ago, playing around ranks 4/5. I am a one time legend played if that means anything. Anyhow I liked the deck as is and really it did pretty good but I started experimenting with other cards besides Doomsayer that could help with board control, Doomsayer is very good at times but very bad at other times and in general I was curious if there's a more proactive card the deck could run.
After a few different versions I ultimately settled on hybridizng the deck with pirates. I am currently running -2 tinyfin, -2 doomsayer, -2 coldlight seer, -1 bilefin, -1 sir finley, -1 mana tide and instead I have +2 small time bucc, +1 patches the pirate, +2 deckhand, +2 spirit claw, +1 thalnos, and +1 lightning bolt.
Pirates are just too good when it comes to early game board control v other aggressive decks and v control playing pirates can bait out removal for your murlocs, I took out Sir Finley since even before adding Spirit Claws to the deck I found myself wanting spell power often for maelstrom portal, especially with the Spirit Claws in like I'm playing now I find that in general the Shaman Hero power is simply the best for the deck.
I don't find myself missing Seer, I really think he's a weak card. He's only good when you already have murlocs out (doesn't help you get the board, only good if you already have it) and v many AoE spells (the things you really worry about) his buff makes no difference anyways. I've experimented with many murloc decks before and I always find myself coming back to this conclusion, he's bad.
The lack of tiny fin's and generally reduced number of murlocs does make every fin harder to cast but it's still generally game winning when you do.
I'm not sure bloodlust is actually good. The only match up it really seems to help in is v renolock.
Finja is extremely powerful, more so than I expected, he can flip a losing game easily.
Overall the deck feels favored v control (except Renolock and Miracle Rogue because of their ridiculous removal) but not that great v other aggro decks though I think my changes help, spirit claw especially has been really strong in aggro mirrors especially if you're skilled at rolling spell power totem. I think the deck is straight up weaker than the regular shaman builds going around right now but you do have surprise on your side and you can build some insane boards and burst people from very high health totals.
I think that most of the time doomsayer done a pretty good job for me.
Usually, I bait their removal with Doomsayer.
Also, there is sometime they don't want to waste their removal on doomsayer so they just atk it and keep my oracle survive for turn 6 so I can spam board with 1, 2 cost murloc and boost all of em with Anyfin
lol this deck does not get a 65% win rate. either you got super lucky on match ups, or your opponant got super unlucky.
Replace Sir Finley Mrrgglton with Leeroy. Replace 1 Coldlight Oracle with Coldlight Oracle.
Try with another deck replace tinyfin with seagiant.
I think coldlight should replace at least 1 for tinyfin. better combo with finja
I made a few changes and played some games with some success
+1 Genzo -1 mana tide, just because I had him and wanted to use him. Seems good so far, draws removal at the least.
+2 sea giants -2 doomsayer
+1 Gormok the impaler -1 tinyfin
I'm also thinking about devolve to deal with taunts, annoying guys...
Maybe -1 sea giant +1 devolve
Looks like a cool deck, I love Murlocs and always want them to be good!
I used to play a sort of midrangey Murloc Paladin and it actually did quite well back during GvG times, the basic strategy was to play normal Paladin stuff like Minibot/Muster for Battle/Argent Squires, while hoarding Murlocs in hand. After they spend removal on your regular minions you drop a bunch of murlocs all at once. Really worked quite well and I have tried building similar decks since but nothing has been that great...
the decision to run doomsayer actually seems great to me in this regard though I know it might look like a strange card to run in a deck like this to some, you don't want to run murlocs out one at a time but it's too hard with the current set of cards imo to find a good mix of non murloc early minions that can compete for the board and bait removal, so just skip all that and run doomsayer instead! Seems like a great idea and I look forward to trying it out.
I love this deck its so much fun and fast and really unsuspected
amazing and fun deck but what do you think about adding feral spirits instead of doomsayer or so? or second rate bruiser? i really hate losing to pirate warrior...or even an ooze maybe?
Do you have a replacement for Maelstrom Portal? I don't have that adventure, but I have mostly everything else. Really wanna try this
Replace 2 maelstrom portal and 2 doomsayers with 2 lightning storm and 2 grimscale oracle for a more aggressive version.
Man I cracked Finjah in my packs and thought he was a total dud but so glad I've found this deck now. Definitely the most fun I've had this expansion, no one knows how to deal with it so it's easy to bait Aoe's etc. Getting a great winrate as well but renolocks seem to be very tough with all they're clears. Any tips on what hero powers to go for?
Against pirate/aggro decks try to find heal or fireblast. In most other situations it's either life tap or steady shot. Yeah, against reno lock it highly depends on the felfire potion. If he gets a large clear with that you probably can't win.
My take on the deck, with a more aggressive approach and a deck presentation: VOD Awesome Murloc Deck
Currently 5-1! ;)
