The purpose of this deck is to set up a one-turn kill on Turn 7. Due to mechanics of the Brawl, this deck is guaranteed to draw Barnes on Turn 4, and Emperor Thaurissan on Turn 6. Because the only other minion in this deck is Malygos, Barnes will always pull Malygos. Thus, with an Emperor discount, a 3-mana Barnes into Malygos with 4 damage spells that deal at least 10 base damage is lethal. Sprint can be used on Turn 7 if an insufficient amount of damage dealing spells are drawn.
Having Malygos in the opening hand or drawing into Malygos is an instant loss. For the mulligan, look specifically for Sinister Strike and the 2-mana spells Eviscerate, Jade Shuriken, and Shiv. Excess spells past the 4th can be used for removal. Also, make sure not to damage to enemy hero if your 3-mana draw is Shadow Strike.
is it just me, or am i that unlucky that i always get malygos more often than barnes
This is a Tavern Brawl deck. I'm not sure how you stumbled across my deck at this point in time, but you really should not be playing this deck outside of the Clockwork Card Dealer Tavern Brawl.
After having had fun with this brawl deck for a few days, (50 wins) I wanted to share a couple of things I've noticed:
1. Drawing into Malygos is bad but not necessarily an auto concede. If you end up with many coins and dmg cards it is still possible to pull out a win.
2. If your opponent is another rogue, they are likely using the Brann/Stealth/Barnes/Blood of the Ancient One combo. Only way to defeat this type is by surviving until turn 7, but you need to have the right removal cards from the beginning. Mulligan for Assassination and Sap to disable Brann and more importantly the Ancient Ones. If your opening hand does not include at least one removal card, (and the rogue gets Bran out with Stealth), they will likely play Barnes and gg.
3. Against fast aggro decks, your only recourse is to keep the board reasonably clear for survival. Eliminate 3 attack or higher minions, sap buffed minions, etc. Sprint may need to be used if you use up too many damage spells. This beings up the next point.
4. If you Sprint on turn 7, on the next turn you MUST play Barnes, or you will draw Malygos on turn 9. I've forgotten this a couple of times and had my OTK plans come crashing down when it happens.
Last word on the gimmick, it is fun way to OTK and surprise opponents, but it is definitely not guaranteed win. I'd say about a 90% win rate after learning the quirks.
First try, but acctualy win because my opponent was stupid enough to not kill an emperor. Actually shadow stepping barnes also works good.
first try, against a mage with ice block, auto lost
Wow. I got it first try. And actually by accident. I miscounted my damage but had a coin to play shiv for the win. 30 damage on turn 7. I know my opponent was stunned. Reno couldn't save him. Nice.
Thanks, I'm glad you're enjoying this deck.
Here's a quick tip: the easiest and quickest way to calculate how much damage you can do with spell damage is to first add up the base damage of the spells. Then, multiply the amount of spell damage you have by the number of spells you are casting, and add that to the base damage sum. For example, with Malygos, Shadow Strike + Eviscerate + Shiv + Sinister Strike = (5 + 4 + 1+ 3) + (5 * 4) = 13 + 20 = 33 damage.
I played Malygos Shaman to Wild Legend this season, and being able to rapidly calculate spell damage burst is essential in piloting that deck well. The same principles apply to this Tavern Brawl deck as well.
Nice fun OTK deck when it works. I was wondering what the Shadow step is there for?
Shadowstep, Preparation, and Counterfeit Coin are there mostly to take up space. This deck can't run any more minions because of Barnes, and the available Rogue weapons take up important mana slots. Assassin's Blade, for example, was cut because having a guaranteed Assassinate to on Turn 5 is paramount in helping you survive.
In general, all the 0-mana spells be mulliganed away in favor of the 2-mana damage spells. Backstab can be kept if you already have multiple burst spells in your opening mulligan. If you do get Shadowstep, it does allow you to play Barnes on Turn 4 instead of holding him for Turn 7. Getting a Malygos on Turn 4 is in most cases useless, but getting a free Emperor discount, along with the Shadowstep discount on Barnes, can potentially allow you to pull off the combo a bit earlier.
Played 20 matches and lost only a couple and of those they were my mistake. You start to get into the swing of it.
Just had the chance to play Barnes ,ShadowStep and play him again, (after having played Emperor.) Got 2 X Maly on board which was really lucky bc I was lacking on lethal without the second one.
On another occasion, I was 1 off lethal, but I kept playing out my hand and the warrior, who would have won next round, hilariously conceded.
This deck rules against slow decks. Aggro tend to get up on you. All in all, great tavern deck fun.
shadowstep barnes, get twice the maly, 13 damage per sinister strike :)
Should I be using some of the spells to keep the board reasonably cleared? Or save them all for the burst turn 7? I keep getting nailed beforehand.
I got lucky and got it the 3rd try round. It's incredibly satisfying when it works!
The opponent played a Hungry Dragon, which summoned a 0/5 Taunt for me. I sapped it and he played it again so I got an extra minion. That held my Emperor out. He wiped the first Malygos with an AoE but by that time he was already on 5 health and the rest was easy.
Thanks
You don't need all of the burst spells to get lethal on turn 7; you only need 4 spells totaling 10 base damage. Extra spells should definitely be used to keep the board clear so you can survive until then. Having Assassinate on Turn 5 to destroy your opponent's largest creature helps a lot, which is why this deck is not running Assassin's Blade.
If you already have a Headcrack, Shadow Strike should definitely be used to clear the board. You should hard mulligan for the 6 2-mana damage spells, as that slot is heavily overloaded with multiple spells. Having Sinister Strike in your opening hand helps too, as you will always get the second Sinister Strike in you opening hand. This means that you only need a single 2-mana burst spell, which frees you up to use any extra 2-mana spells for removal.
