The idea is to repeatedly flood the board with minions and buff them until your opponent runs out of answers. It's worked well against reno priest/mage, mixed results against pirate warrior/renolock, poor against shaman, terrible against dragon priest.

In addition the deck is built such that every Barnes target is better than a 1/1 token. Arcane giant could be a feasible addition, possibly worth watering Barnes down if there are not too many aggressive decks in the meta.

Additionally, if you can get two or three mana crystals out of pilfered power by turn 5 you're usually in good shape. The inconsistency comes if you don't find Nourish for big card draw. Also, I was pleasantly surprised to find that if you use Pilfered Power when you have 10 mana crystals and at least one minion on the board you create an Excess Mana, so you can cycle the card or combine it with violet teachers for lots of tokens.
