This is an attempt at creating a Mage deck with the new quest Open the Waygate. The deck is build similarly to Freeze Mage but with a similar win condition as the old Echo Mage deck which was a very popular deck before the rotation.
I feel like running 4 giants is too risky but that's where Molten Reflection comes into play. It gives you more flexibility and more consistency by copying the one version of Giant you can play. You don't need 4 giants with Alexstrasza. The combo is as follows:
- Play 1 giant (Molten Giant or Arcane Giant) or both depending on what activator you have;
- Copy it with Molten Reflection;
- Play your Time Warp;
- Play Alexstrasza on your opponent and hit them for 16.
This should be enough against most opponents. Warriors and Druids could be a problem but Warriors have Brawl so 4 giants would be easily cleared and Druids can't clear 2 of them anyway.
As for the early game, Arcanologist is basically a 2 mana 2/3 draw Ice Block which is crazy powerful and consistent. There are enough Quest activators and you can pick a thrid Molten Reflection if need be as another win condition. The rest are either draw engines or delay tools.
I am excited to test it out!
Edit: With the bonus of discovering JUG spells, the likelihood of getting a Molten Reflection might be high enough that including 2 of them is overkill. We'll have to see but it's good to keep that in mind.
Edit2: There is the consideration of running another combo with Time Warp. It consists in:
- Playing 2 Sorcerer's Apprentice;
- Playing 2 Molten Reflection;
- Playing Time Warp;
- Playing Archmage Antonidas;
- Casting a spell and chaining Fireball.
This combo is arguably stronger than the giant one since it can bypass Taunt minions and deal an infinite amount of damage. However, it requires a lot of cards and a substantial set up. I don't think it is consistent enough to see reliable play. We shall see. If Taunt decks are in the meta, some adjustements will have to be made.
Changelog: +1 Arcane Giant/ -1 Molten Giant for more consistency. +1 Polymorph/ -1 Molten Reflection for more control. +1 Acolyte of Pain / -1 Mana Bind. +2 Kabal Courier +1 Loot Hoarder / -1 Acolyte of Pain -2 Shimmering Tempest
Addendum: Well, I didn't expect my theorycrafting deck to get that much success, thank you all for liking. I didn't ask for this, but this was merely a draft and now that the expansion is out, I can see how unrefined this list is and that the Mage Quest might not be the most viable Quest of all. Being busy I haven't even had a chance to test it out. That said, there are plenty of other lists in Hearthpwn that must be better and I encourage everyone to check them out.
I don't have any footage of the deck in action, but a really cool guy named kiwiinbacon made a video about it. You should take a look at it!
love it
Oh, the satisfaction level when this deck plays right into my Ice Block is over 9000 :D
Hand is always way too full to do anything. Most times Tome/Arcane Intellect sits there uselessly.
This deck is honestly good, but I do not recommend it for the current meta. As Noxious pointed out in one of his recent videos, almost half the meta consists of Warrior and Rogues, both of which are unfavorable against this deck, especially taunt warrior as it can foil the TTK combo with Dirty Rats as shown in my last match of the video where my opponent managed to play 3 of them. Today I played 8 matches with different variations of this deck and all matches I got were either Rogue or Warrior. Here are the last 3 matches.
I'm not sure why you would think rogue is a counter to this deck. In fact, I find it to be the opposite, at least with quest rogue. I'm 6-1 against rogue and I have always managed to chain freeze their board until I can draw the TTK. Their early game tends to be very slow as they are constantly returning minions to their hand instead of applying pressure with it on the board. This usually lets you put in some chip damage most games as well as freely starting to complete your own quest. The only real counter to this deck is being rushed down which is accomplished much better by other aggro decks, notably hunter. Dirty Rat is definitely a huge counter to the deck, but if you're facing too many control/taunt warriors you can at least tech in a pyroblast or something to help you get the kill off through their armor.
Here is another match with the deck. And it is a little more interesting this time cause i i burn the quest but still managed too win check it out.
Utter rubbish useless deck. Maybe it was good when the expansion was released. In the current meta is useless.
Very fun and powerful deck. I added 1 Sorcerer's Apprentice in place of 1 Polymorph because I often find myself having difficulty emptying my hand for Cabalist's Tomes, other draw/cycle cards, or just Time Warp. I don't really find polymorph to have any use against basically all of the meta aggro decks and it's especially useless against the seemingly very popular quest rogue. I find Sorcerer's Apprentice can fit nicely as a 2 drop, it's almost a must remove, I used to run two but I found the loot hoarder cycling into your own deck for the combo is generally more useful to finish off games than just playing a bunch of spells. The sheer value of getting off an early Cabalist's Tome or any discounted value early game makes Sorcerer's Apprentice much more valuable to the deck than Polymorph IMO. The deck tends to get countered very hard by Dirty Rat and control warrior/taunt warrior but it's very solid against most decks in my experiences. Hunter isn't as common but the deck seems to struggle a lot against their annoying hero power constantly threatening to pop ice block. Currently 22-11 at rank 12
Here some gameplay of the deck in action.
How is Molten Reflection better than Faceless Shambler. If you search for decks with Open the Waygate + "Faceless Shambler there are exactly 3 decks with 0 upvotes on this site. Am I missing something? Pretty sure Faceless Shambler does exactly the same, plus will save ur ass a lot when u just dont have your quest completed and need a big taunt (when comboed with Molten Giant or Arcane Giant
Molten reflections is REQUIRED for exodia mage due to how exodia mage works.
1st turn of exodia play: 10 Mana
sorc apren x2 :4 mana, -2 spell cost
molten reflection :2 mana, -3 spell cost
molten reflection again: 1 mana, -4 spell cost.
At the end of the first turn you have spent 7 mana and have a total of -4 spell cost.
You play 2 cards and copied twice. Faceless is not a spell HENCE not affected by sorc.
After the 4 units are down, time warp now cost 1 mana and fireball now costs 0. Also forgot to say that the effect of sorc is needed and shambler doesn't copy effects.
As for giant mage you don't really know when you will pull your one win condition or your other giant so its semi risky to do so. In this deck aside from giant and alex are all soley stall, finish quest or draw cards to end the match. Each card could do what it needs to alone (aside from maybe the frost nova to doom) but this card would need a decent card to copy (like doomsayer) but the only actually usable copies in this deck is Giant, Alex, Doomsayer. If you molten reflection doomsayer, and your opponent has 1 hard clear like Siphon Soul you would be stuck with a 0/7 taunt that they may or may not have the board to clear. If you molten reflectioned it it would also be a top priority (all amusing the board doesn't have 7 damage and they only have 1 hard removal). If you were to copy giant you would have to look for the other giant to get lethal (assuming he removes the giants or him having the proper taunts or something) and so it could be a gamble to do so. (*depending on your opponent*). There is only ONE molten reflection in this deck for one reason, the win condition.
It's preference basically. Obviously you need it in exodia mage, but other than that, it's slightly better if you really need to stabilize against an aggro deck but slightly worse utility for stuff like copying stuff like doomsayer, a draw deathrattle, or any other minion you might get from Kabal Courier. It also counts as a spell towards discounting Arcane Giants or for any other random cards you acquire.
Wow this deck is fun. Running the antonidas combo and I've found it quite consistent. Lots of draw, lots of stall, subbed the 2 kabals for 2 tempests and slowly climbing currently from 15-6
What Did You Replace For The Deck Im Having Problems finding out what to replace for what...
I love this deck but can anyone tell me how to beat Taunt Warrior with it? xD 0-7 against them so far. Quest Rogue is similar, just won if they drew really shitty. Other matchups went pretty well, for example against Elemental Shaman (100% winrate so far) or any kind of Priest.
Did anyone manage to trigger this combo even once? Antonidas needs more cards, but somehow it's much more doable. And you're done if your opponent has a taunt.
Not gonna lie, I was quite uncertain about this with all the setup required, but when i actually played time warp, I realized How strong it is! not only you gain an extra turn but you also get another topdeck that could potentially win you the game!
I made a short video showcasing the deck , which I hope you enjoy :D
Late decks sucks on this meta, how you win against pirateWarrior , quest rogue , aggro hunter, ele shaman , zoolock?....
0% win rate. This deck only works when you fight against priest.
Dear mages,
Please stop pulling 4 frost novas and 3 blizzards out of your buttholes. For once could cabalist tome give you plebs like, I don't know, something that doesn't freeze the whole board .
Appreciate it
Nothing is better than playing a Primordial Glyph and getting another Primordial Glyph!
