Just saying that secret pal has become less popular is a admittance to how this card is not too little too late. In the end this card will punish the standard format freeze mage the wild format secret pal and that is a solid tech card by those parameters. It is not a BGH level tech card because it is niche but if you tech to beat secrets this card will do the job that kezan could not fulfill. Overall, its a medoicre drop when not countering secrets and a good card when it does counter. Tech card design should aspire to be at this level across the board.
I think it also depends on if other secrets are introduced to fill the place of those leaving.
Finally , i can get rid of Mysterious Challenger with 1 card !
This card isn't even that great vs secret paladin. You get a big dude and you kill his secrets, but the only reason why the secrets are good in the first place is because they protect the challenger so hes almost guaranteed to attack the turn after. The challenger also draws 5 cards and is a 6 6. The main reason why secret paladin is so OP is that it allows you to play a deck that has an extremely high amount of 1 drops that let you put on early pressure and curve out really nicely, then at the stage in the game where 1 drops no longer have value, you don't have to worry about drawing them, and you can topdeck dr boom and tirion. That's how the deck works, so if youre not killing the challenger turn 7, then youre in bad shape anyway. Big game hunter is actually better than this vs the challenger because it removes 10 damage from the board (the 6 6 with avenge and competitive spirit) the secret eater only removes 6 damage. (the avenge, the competitive spirit, and the noble sacrifice (which gets redemptioned)).
However, eater of secrets really punishes control mage and control hunter decks. Both are decks people actually enjoy playing and seeing. If youre playing a deck with a lot of secrets like a duplicate mage, then they play secret eater, you lose the game. period. And you lose in a very uninteractive and un-fun way. Ive played games before with the cool discover duplicate mage where i had duplicate, ice block, and another secret i got from scarab, and was having interesting and fun games and then a hunter plays flare and the game instantly becomes un-fun, and you lose an extreme amount of tempo and value from that point. Theres literally 0 reason to play around flare or kezan mystic because 1. the cards are rare, and 2. even if you knew for a fact that they had those cards in hand, theres no good way to play around them. Youre going to get completely screwed no matter what because your opponent's going to get extreme tempo/value no matter what other cards he has in hand.
Cards like this should not exist in the game because they are too punishing of something that should not have a punishment. Secrets in the case of hunter and mage are part of the class's design. If you knew off the top that your opponent was going to play that card before you even made your deck, you would have to not include secrets in your deck and both mage and hunter are pretty much REQUIRED to run at least 1 secret. Without secrets, hunter gets completely overrun by agro decks and out valued by decks that play 1 big minion every turn. So basically, if everyone played this card, those 2 classes would be unplayable. BAD CARD DESIGN.
Byebye secret paladin
Dont forget that mad scientist will be gone so it is highly likely that there will be a lot less people playing secrets.
Keep in mind all decks are legitimate even if they are easier to play and more effective. Also, it's never a good thing to completely destroy a card just to get a deck out of the meta. Luckily secret paladin has less of a presence right now so this card will only see moderate amounts of play. As such, Secret Paladin will still be played to a slightly lesser extent and with the added risk, will balance out the deck greatly.
I disagree with people saying that this is a bad card. Is it MfB/Boom tier? No, but it definitely has its place.
First of all, this card is totally dependent on the meta. Even if it doesn't end up being used to a large extent, its mere existence will be enough to discourage the use of Mysterious Challenger in Wild mode. This is a good thing.
Second, this card isn't useless simply because you're not facing a Challenger. Secrets are used by other classes too, and even eating as few as 1 or 2 Secrets with this card is decent value.
As subtle as a tank rolling down a hill.
in wild mode:
secret paladin decks usually run 4 different secrets. usually they draw 1 or 2 of them in best case they play dr 6 and you play this you will get a 5-7 on board and a 3 or 2 drop. they will use last durability of light justice and challenger to kill eater of secrets and of course their board will overwhelming with that early cards (shielded minibot muster shredder loatheb) your 3 or 2 drop wont last long then they will play dr 7
this card counters dr 6 BUT secret paladin doesnt only contain dr 6 they have still shielded minibot muster keeper loatheb so eater of secrets wont kill secret paladin.
in standard mode
it is a weaker kezan mystic because this card is only good after dr 6 turn secret paladin wont see play in current circumstances
secret paladin wont see play in standard in current circumstances their early game is pretty much dead without 2,3,4 ,5 drops
even you dealt with their secrets they have so much threat this card is in the best case a doomguard(without charge and 1 discard)+ flare against dr 6
why so many dislikes ?
doesn't people understand what kappa means?
This card will also be the bane of midrange and control hunters. It has uses even against facehunter and their explosive traps.
The most interesting effect of this card is that it can pump up Tempo Mage somehow. With this card up in the meta, nobody will run Effigy or Mirror Entity in their decks. That will free up some card slots for more interesting stuff.
I see people screaming for nerf in the first week after the release of the expansion.
Ya, it makes sense.
This card is a hard counter against Mysterious Challenger. What doesn't mean it won't see play anymore (although it's very likely): people will change their decks and playstyles to deal with this one.
Imagine playing this against a 6 mana drop that fetches 1 or maybe 2 different secrets instead of 5. Not that great counter, a 3/5 or maybe 4/6 for 4 mana. It would be worse than Kezan Mystic, but since it will be out of standard, people would have no choice.
Better than Kezan mystic :)
It can be good against cancer paladins, but Kezan Mystic can be better against mages and hunters
I think Whistleblower would be a better name.
