I tinkered around with Rogue this season mostly for the fun aspect and realized that Valeera has always got the tools to be a powerful control opponent. This deck provides you with an insane amount of options at every point in match and I dare to say, has a strong match-up against any competitor.
***IMPORTANT CHANGES***
Deck has changed a lot.
I tinkered in a Blade Flurry to solve the problem of board clears, even with the nerf its still working great. The 2nd hard removal (in the matter of Blade of C'Thun was taken out and Twin Emperor Vek'lor with it) - it worked very well in long matches but because the meta is so fast, you don't have time for such combos; Big Game Hunter took its place (still testing it!). Brought back the Shadowcaster as I felt he would get more value out of the new cards. Also, now you got Doomsayer.
I'll detail my card choices and changes down below in the updated guide
The Guide
- General Mulligan
- How to play, game strategy, card analysis
- Replacements
- Tips & tricks
- Video / Screenshots (in construction)
1. General Mulligan
Against Aggro:
You want to keep/dig for:
- Backstab
- Blade Flurry
- SI:7 Agent (with The Coin)
- Deadly Poison
- Fan of Knives
- Perdition's Blade
- Sap - only against Shaman & Druid!
- Reno Jackson (pretty damn important to have this on turn 6; just in case)
- Eviscerate
- Betrayal can also be good if you don't expect excessive flooding (e.g its good against Midrange Hunter)
- Doomsayer is best to keep in hand vs aggro! Drop it on turn 2 and you gain one turn for free. Few classes can remove it but even if that happens they used a lot of tools (that would normally go face).
All these have their priority level depending on the matchup. For example. Reno Jackson is a necessity VS Hunter AND ZOO and Fan of Knives VS Hunter & Pally. Try to find Eviscerate against Warlock & Warrior.
Against Midrange/Control:
You want to keep/dig for:
- Backstab
- Sap especially against Druids and Shamans
- Undercity Huckster
- Eviscerate
- Shadow Strike
- Deadly Poison
- Southsea Squidface OR SI:7 Agent with The Coin
Curve well against aggro and use your tempo cards to control the board as intelligently as possible. Acidic Swamp Ooze can be good early against Shaman's Doomhammer. Against Warrior, keep the Ooze for their Gorehowl.
2. How to play, game strategy, card analysis
Rogue is known for their tempo plays and filling the mana curve very well. Do the same with this deck: Control the board as optimally as possible. You'll have a lot of decision making because most of the times you'll have many possible answers.
- Bread and butter against aggro: If you get to dagger up against aggro, keep at least one durability on it, never attack again because you'll need it for Blade Flurry. Make use of Deadly Poison efficiently (if you have a 3-1 dagger, keep it and use it for board AoE). Also, make use of spelldamage! Your Bloodmage Thalnos is there for a reason.
- Perdition Blade serves the same purpose. Best against aggro, this card can easily remove 2 minions/turn and has 2 attack for the board clear. Same with it, keep it at 1 durability for board-clears.
- Southsea Squidface - solid body that on death provides your dagger with enough power to use with a Blade Flurry. Greater card with the addition of the latter.
- Doomsayer turn 2/3 depending on case. Enough said.
- Play as greedy as possible versus Priest & Control Warrior and make them use removal in vain. You can play any Deathrattles because you have N'Zoth later to back you up.
- If you can prevent lots of damage and you didn't draw your Reno, Preparation + Assassinate is NOT a bad play in many cases. You can get up to 4 Reno Jacksons in this deck so healing is not at all a problem.
- Jeweled Scarab can give you Earthen Ring Farseer, Fan of Knives, Brann Bronzebeard, Edwin VanCleef and Shadow Strike all useful tools for this deck. The card is insane in Rogue. Choose wisely.
- Xaril, Poisoned Mind's value is over the roof. Keep Bloodthistle Toxin for what Battlecry you need the most depending on the matchup.
- If you want to drop N'Zoth, the Corruptor and your opponent still has boardclears, Shadowstep it back to your hand to make your opponent cry. Remember, the new Deathrattles summoned by N'Zoth add up to the second summon.
- If you drop Reno Jackson and think about getting it back to your hand with Shadowstep, think again. Can the opponent remove it? Does he want to remove it or go face again? This should be clear for you because if you let it stay on board, you can trade with it and Shadowstep/Shadowcaster it next turn.
- The Black Knight always finds a target in this meta. ***TAKEN OUT*** If you get matched against lots of control, you can put it back in.
3. Replacements
Deck creation may be rough for some because it lies at around ~9000 dust. Must legendaries/epics to have are:
- Reno Jackson - this deck can't work without him. He's so easy to obtain from the first wing on Explorers. No replacement
- Sylvanas Windrunner - amazing all-around card. Works in many decks. Should be top priority to craft in any Collection. Weaker replacement: Cairne Bloodhoof
- N'Zoth, the Corruptor - reliable and powerful endgame card, the most powerful of the old gods. The value this guy has with this deck is just disgusting (you can also use Shadowstep on him). Weaker replacement: Ragnaros, Ysera or another Journey Below (keep in mind that you can mess up your Reno with that).
- Xaril, Poisoned Mind is not as important as those above but he sure does a lot of work too. Very flexible and reliable legendary. Fair replacement Tomb Pillager
- Shadowcaster. This guy has its solid place in the deck but if you don't have 400 extra dust to spare for him, try Stampeding Kodo or a Shado-Pan Rider
4. Tips & Tricks
- Punish Druids & Shamans with Sap
- Shadowstep N'Zoth in heavy control matchups.
- Shadowstep or use Xaril's Poison/Shadowcaster on Reno almost all the time. If you get to Fatigue, the 4 possible Renos in this deck are MVP.
- Follow your opponent and when you feel he over-commits on the board, board-clear with your Blade Flurry. AGAIN, always keep one durability on your dagger to make your board-clear cheaper!
- Journey Below anytime you got spare mana. Anub'arak is really insane against control but choose something else against aggro. Xaril, Poisoned Mind, Sylvanas Windrunner & Tomb Pillager are amazing. Sometimes even Huckster works well.
- Always watch for big Betrayal plays. Its not a card to be overlooked!
General Tips:
Keep your options alive for any kind of play expected from the opponent. Don't be greedy. This is the first deck I ever played where Dagger + Pass is viable against a Heal + Pass Priest.
You got lots of threats and lots of answers. Rogue can do both at the same time so plan and go for big plays.
I don't know how but Burgle and Huckster always find me useful tools.
Hold Acidic Swamp Ooze for Gorehowl, let that Fiery War Axe swing away happily.
Use Reno Jackson + Preparation + Assassinate against a Freeze Mage's Alexstrasza (you can also Shadowstep Reno back to your hand to make the Mage even sadder)
*VERY IMPORTANT* Have Sylvanas Windrunner on the table if you expect your opponent to play C'Thun.
Try it out and you'll have the best time playing it. I'll throw in a detailed guide (maybe a video) if you guys like it. Maybe at 5 upvotes or sooner :).
If you guys are having fun with this deck/getting some insane plays, grab a screenshot and post it here, I'm very interested where this deck can go.
This deck gets annihilated by any aggro deck. Not a very good deck at all.
Wow, that art is amazing. It pretty much convinced me to try out the deck by itself, lol.
twin emperor and no chtun?? there are no better taunts??
Played my first game just now, vs a Freeze mage. Huckster gave me Antonidas and I had journey below and prep in my hand, ended up fireballing him to death! Awesome game
1st game: Sceptical, but completely destroys Kripp's budget Warrior Aggro deck with ease. (Albeit with a little luck, got +10 armour from the burgle.)
2nd game: C'thun Priest, find myself with a very full hand with plenty of situational cards. Got Forbidden Shaping from Huckster into Anomalus, funny moment of the game. Ultimately ended in a loss due to opponent drawing into C'Thun and an inability to remove his Brann. Potential problem with premium removal, or drawing into it.
3rd game: Faced a mill rogue, first card that was milled... N'Zoth. First card he milled, one of my Spiders from Beneath the Grounds. It was going famously... Bad. Until the Jeweled Scarab showed up. Oh that beautiful little beast. I got a grand total of 6 Van Cleef's played over the course of the game (He made the mistake of sapping Van Cleef, twice.). I won. No Vek'lor, no Blade of C'thun, no N'zoth, even Sylvanas was milled but who cares with 6 Van Cleef's, right? (12/12 reached twice... I cried a little, then laughed for a good half hour.)
4th game: Face shaman, turn 6 I was dead. Reno in hand, wasn't alive long enough to use it. When is Blizzard going to remove Dr. 4 from this game?
5th game: Face shaman, dead turn 5, Reno in hand. Wasn't alive yet again long enough to use it.
Conclusion after 5 games: Fantastic fun, when you're ahead then it's GG. The issue is getting to that point. Often I have a bunch of situational cards in hand without a viable time to use them and lack much needed removal. Perhaps lucky milligans can resolve the issue however face decks, i.e. 99% of ladder decks, destroy this rogue deck. If you're out for a laugh go for it, if you're out for climbing stay far far away.
There are probably enough spells in the deck for Yogg, I think. Might try it out.
I so badly want this to work out, I'm fed up of these face roll zoo and aggro decks dominating because people are too stupid to play anything worth playing. Keep up the good work, mate.
But there is no Vanish in your deck :) So 2 of 8 combos u named are not playable.
no Shadowcaster?
and any replacement for Beneath the Grounds ?
Hard to replace card that REKT Reno and make your opponent think twice about number of cards he want to draw this turn. Beneath the Grounds is unique card and it hard to replace but i guess you could try to replace it with Edwin VanCleef or even with Jeweled Scarab to just try get it or another valuable 3 drop.
Shadowcaster is good idea but still not sure abot things that could be cut for it.
Short guide to this deck:
1. Pray and ask G -Gods let you get EXACT cards you need. Especially pray for Reno.
2. Pray that your Twin Twin Emperor Vek'lor will be not just 4/6 taunt for 7 mana and give you 2nd 4/6.
3. To make dream in p.2 real you should pray that you will not die before turn 7-8-9 to use Blade of C'Thun to buff your C'Thun that not present in deck. Just imagine that and it might help.
4. ??
5. PROFIT.
1/30 deck with greedy Twin Emperor Vek'lor without another buffers will not work. And even N'Zoth, the Corruptor cant save you from big aggro start and shitty hand after mulligan.
But he is right. I played a similar deck and even with more card draw it is hard to have the right cards at the right time. As much as I like the deck, but against aggro you have a hard time. I guess that's because the best board clear for Rogue has been nerfed.
I made myself similar deck but i used C'Thun instead of N'Zoth, the Corruptor and also more buffers. At first 10 matches it work perfect but after that i just realize that if i don't get exact card i will RIP cause i have no asnwers.
You could say that i am wrong but you can't prove it, cause random is not controllable by ANY way. Its mean you CAN'T get perfect game get hand you need - that the big problem of any 1/30 decks (aka "Reno's decks"). Even Reno's Warlock can lack of consistency with card draw hero power, so with rogue here will be much more issues.
I don't know may be its just me so unlucky ("unskilled") and i just can't topdeck anyhing i need in time?
This meta became faster and faster - most tempo rogues will kill you turn 5-6-7 and if you don't have board clear AND (not "OR", cause not clearing board mean you will die just few turns after) Reno - "well met" / "well played" / "greeting traveler" / "the pleasure is mine". In few words - you are lost game.
Have a nice pray today and any other day, but please don't say this deck mean anything but "pray skills", because its too much based on that.
Here is decklist i used to play build by my own at May's season start.
Probbly Doomcaller could be replaced with N'Zoth, the Corruptor.
Main idea of this post: I don't say that my deck better - it's same random 1/30 deck i play FOR FUN and never pretend it as climb lader deck.
28-26 so far.
There's no easier time to rank than at the very end of the season, that doesn't make this deck good.
Looks interesting but current version seems to be missing a card (18 rogue + 11 general).
Thanks,
D5
Downvoted because it's too good and I don't want others to find out.
Why do you have Twin Emps? You have no C'thun in the deck to get to 10/10 for the activator. Have you even played this deck your self?
Theres only 29 cards in the deck list atm <3
This deck is a bad gimmick at best.
